The number of dwellings approved in Australia fell 4.3% in September, in seasonally adjusted terms. This follows a 7.6% increase in August.

Private sector house approvals fell 16.0% in September, to 10,168, following a 3.7% rise in August. Private sector dwellings excluding houses rose 18.1% in September.

By state, total dwelling approvals fell in South Australia (-22.7%), Queensland (-21.5%), Western Australia (-20.9%), Victoria (-15.7%) and Tasmania (-11.8%), in seasonally adjusted terms. New South Wales rose 27.2%, driven by a rise in apartment developments approved in September.

Approvals for private sector houses fell in all states: South Australia (-26.8%), Victoria (-18.0%), Queensland (-16.0%), New South Wales (-13.9%), and Western Australia (-12.2%), in seasonally adjusted terms.

The value of total building approved fell 11.2% in September, in seasonally adjusted terms. The value of non-residential building fell 11.3%, having risen 43.5% in August.

The value of total residential building fell 11.1%, comprising a 9.6% decrease in new residential building, and a 20.0% fall in alterations and additions after the series reached its second-highest level in August.

This publication provides the number of dwelling units and value of buildings approved released in Building Approvals, Australia on 3 November 2021.

Small area data cubes and CSV files will be made available in an “Additional Information” release five business days after the main publication. These will be for Statistical Areas Level 2 and Local Government Areas. Release dates are published under the “Forthcoming Issues” section of the publication and in the ABS Release Calendar.

A number of time series spreadsheets contain ‘np’ (not available for publication) annotations. This is due to confidential data being contained in these series.

Revisions this month

In this release, revisions are provided for the time period from July 2020 to August 2021. Further information about potential sources of revisions can be found in the feature article released with the January 2016 Building Approvals publication - "Revisions to Building Approval Statistics".
